The Real Differences Between A Business Analyst & Project Manager



This article is a controversial topic today on whether business analysts make good management consultants. Analytical skills have to do with gathering information from various sources and then interpreting the data in order to reach a logical conclusion that benefits the business. If there are many components to the final product or service, for example, there is a greater need for more resources dedicated to the analysis of the project.

In order to understand the complete scope of the project, the BFBA's first task is to ensure that the correct individuals from all affected departments are included as part of the project team for business process workflow and requirements gathering.

Having them as a standard part of the governance process will help empower the business analyst to play a more equal role in the project as when timelines get squeezed it can be tempting for the project manager to see what can be cut out. Product owners are internally-focused and product managers are externally-focused.

Data analysts are also responsible for protecting an organization's data and ensuring that all data repositories produce consistent and reusable data. They are responsible for the preparation, documentation and confirmation of requirements for the project.

I developed a model for business analysis leadership, which called for leadership at several different levels: self, project, professional organization and the wider world. The BA reviews all project deliverables that are related to requirements, solution design and testing; looking in detail to make sure that the business needs are being addressed.
